Flying During a Typhoon: Will Your Flight Be Affected?

ILS 的操作類別包括 CAT I、CAT II 與 CAT III。

Windy.com

  • VFR(Visual Flight Rules):
  • MVFR(Marginal Visual Flight Rules):
  • IFR(Instrument Flight Rules):
  • LIFR(Low Instrument Flight Rules):

METAR(METeorological Aerodrome Report)是機場定期發布的天氣報告,內容有風向、風速、能見度、雲況等,可以當作機場此刻的天氣快照。

Flying During a Typhoon: Will Your Flight Be Affected?

Will flights operate as usual during a typhoon? Can planes still take off and land safely?

You have been looking forward to your trip abroad, but a typhoon is approaching just before departure. It is natural to feel worried. Many travelers have the same questions: Will my flight take off and land as scheduled?

The answer does not depend on the typhoon's strength alone. It also depends on the airport's wind direction, wind speed, gusts, and visibility at the time of takeoff or landing.

In this article, I will explain in simple terms who decides whether a flight can operate during a typhoon, the crosswind limits of common Boeing and Airbus aircraft, and how to use the free tool Windy.com to track typhoon paths and check airport weather before your trip.

Who Decides Whether Flights Can Operate During a Typhoon?

Let's start with the key point: Taiwan does not have a single rule that automatically cancels all flights based on a typhoon's strength. Whether a flight operates depends largely on the airline's decision, with the airline, captain, airport, and air traffic control each playing different roles.

  • Airline: Decides whether to release a flight

Airlines assess typhoon forecasts, airport wind conditions, weather at the destination, alternate airport conditions, and fuel requirements to determine whether a flight can operate safely.

Since airlines make their own operational decisions, one airline may operate its flights as scheduled while another cancels flights on the same day.

The airline staff responsible for this work are called dispatchers. They assess flight risks and decide whether a flight can be released. They may also cancel, delay, or adjust flights as weather conditions change.

  • Captain: Decides whether it is safe to take off or land

If the captain determines that conditions are unsuitable for safe flight, the relevant flight operations must be stopped or discontinued as required.

During a typhoon, the captain considers the actual wind direction, wind speed, gusts, runway conditions, and aircraft operating limits before deciding whether it is safe to land.

If conditions become unsuitable as the aircraft approaches the runway, the captain can perform a go-around. This means climbing back into the air and assessing whether another approach is possible.

If the weather remains poor, the crew may divert to another airport rather than repeatedly attempt to land.

While the aircraft is airborne, the crew can also exchange updated information with the airline's dispatch team, including destination weather, go-arounds by other flights, and conditions at alternate airports.

However, during the final approach and landing, the captain must make the decision to continue or go around based on the actual conditions.

  • Airport: Maintains ground facilities and operations

The airport operator is responsible for airport facilities and ground safety. For example, strong winds may affect passenger boarding bridges and baggage handling.

Depending on wind conditions, the airport may take protective measures or suspend the use of boarding bridges and certain ground operations. These measures help protect ground equipment and staff.

  • Air Traffic Control (ATC): Manages aircraft movements

Air traffic control manages approach sequences, aircraft separation, and ground movements.

During a typhoon, flights may be delayed, go around, or divert to other airports. ATC plays an important role in coordinating aircraft movements and maintaining overall flight safety.

In general, arriving flights may be more affected than departing flights during a typhoon.

A departing flight can remain on the ground and wait for the weather to improve. An arriving flight, however, is already airborne and must consider its remaining fuel and the weather at its destination. If necessary, the crew may need to hold, go around, or divert to another airport.

Strong crosswinds and sudden gusts can also make landing more difficult. As a result, arriving flights may experience more go-arounds, diversions, or delays during a typhoon.

How Much Crosswind Can Common Boeing and Airbus Aircraft Handle?

During takeoff and landing, pilots generally prefer a headwind, which blows toward the front of the aircraft. A headwind increases the airflow over the wings relative to the ground speed, helping the aircraft generate the required lift at a lower ground speed.

However, the wind does not always blow directly along the runway. When it comes from the side, it creates a crosswind.

The following are commonly cited reference figures for the maximum crosswind capability of popular Boeing and Airbus aircraft. These figures are not the maximum wind force an aircraft structure can withstand. Actual operating limits vary by aircraft variant, weather conditions, and airline procedures.

  • Boeing 737-800: Approximately 33 knots

  • Boeing 777: Approximately 38–40 knots

  • Boeing 787: Approximately 37–40 knots

  • Airbus A320: Approximately 38 knots

  • Airbus A330: Approximately 40 knots

  • Airbus A350: Approximately 40 knots

Note: One knot (kt) is approximately 1.852 kilometers per hour. Therefore, 30–40 knots is about 56–74 km/h.

Wide-body aircraft, such as the A330, A350, B777, and B787, may have different crosswind operating capabilities from narrow-body aircraft, such as the A320 and B737. However, you should not assume that every wide-body aircraft can handle stronger crosswinds than every narrow-body aircraft.

When booking a flight, choosing a wide-body aircraft does not guarantee a safer or more reliable landing in strong winds. The aircraft's specific operating limits and the conditions at the airport are what matter.

Visibility is another important factor. Heavy rain, low clouds, and fog brought by a typhoon can make it difficult for pilots to see the runway. In these conditions, aircraft may use the Instrument Landing System (ILS) to help guide them during the approach.

ILS operations are divided into CAT I, CAT II, and CAT III categories. In general, higher categories allow approaches and landings under lower visibility and cloud-base conditions.

To use a particular ILS category, several requirements must be met:

  • The aircraft must have the appropriate equipment and capabilities.

  • The airport runway, lighting, and related facilities must meet the required standards.

  • The flight crew must hold the necessary qualifications.

  • The airline must have the relevant authorization, and the current conditions must meet operational requirements.

If any of these requirements are not met, the aircraft cannot use the lower-visibility operating standards associated with that category.

There is a common claim in the aviation industry that some low-cost airlines may not equip every aircraft or qualify every crew for higher-category ILS operations because of cost considerations. However, this should not be assumed to apply to all low-cost airlines. Differences in landing capability must be assessed based on each airline's actual aircraft equipment, crew qualifications, and operating approvals.

How to Track Typhoons with Windy.com: What Are ECMWF, UKM, and JMA?

Windy.com is a weather visualization platform that displays forecast data from different meteorological organizations on a map.

Windy is not itself a primary weather forecasting agency. Instead, it brings together different forecast models and weather data, allowing users to compare predictions more easily.

Windy's typhoon-tracking features are available for free, and you can use the website without registering an account.

How to check a typhoon's path:

  1. Open Windy.com

  2. Look for "Hurricane Tracker" in the map layers or available tools.

  3. Select the tropical cyclone you want to track.

  4. Check its past movement and forecast path.

You can also switch between different forecast models, such as ECMWF, UKM, and JMA, to compare their predictions of the typhoon's path.

  • ECMWF: The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts model, which helps track the possible movement of a typhoon.

  • JMA: Weather forecast data from the Japan Meteorological Agency. You can also refer to the official JMA website for typhoon updates.

  • UKM: The UK Met Office model, which provides another forecast for comparison.

Different models use different numerical methods, so their forecasts may vary. Instead of relying on just one model, it's best to compare the predicted paths from ECMWF, JMA, and UKM.

When multiple models predict a similar path, the forecast is generally more reliable.

How to Check Airport Weather on Windy.com

In addition to tracking a typhoon's path, you can use Windy.com to check weather conditions at an airport.

Select an airport on the map to view its location and related weather information.

For example, Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport has the ICAO airport code RCTP. Airport weather displays may use the following four categories:

  • VFR (Visual Flight Rules): Visibility and cloud-base conditions are generally good.

  • MVFR (Marginal Visual Flight Rules): Visibility or cloud-base conditions are less favorable.

  • IFR (Instrument Flight Rules): Visibility or cloud-base conditions are poor.

  • LIFR (Low Instrument Flight Rules): Visibility or cloud-base conditions are very poor.

These categories provide a quick overview of airport weather conditions. For example, if Taoyuan Airport is marked VFR, visibility and cloud-base conditions generally meet the criteria for visual flight weather.

However, this does not mean that aircraft are necessarily operating under visual flight rules. Commercial airliners normally operate under Instrument Flight Rules (IFR). Therefore, an airport marked IFR does not automatically mean flights will be canceled. Actual operations depend on the weather, aircraft equipment, and airport operating conditions.

Next, let's look at the airport's actual weather conditions.

METAR (Meteorological Aerodrome Report) is a routine weather report for an airport. It includes information such as wind direction, wind speed, visibility, and cloud conditions, providing a snapshot of the current weather.

In Windy's METAR tab, there is also a Runways section that shows the current wind conditions for each runway.

Taoyuan International Airport has two parallel runways, each with two directions. That's why you'll see four runway numbers: 05L, 05R, 23L, and 23R.

Two numbers are displayed next to each runway number:

  • The first shows the wind component along the runway (headwind or tailwind).

  • The second shows the crosswind component.

For example, the wind component along runway 05 is 4 knots (4 kt), and the crosswind is 11 knots (11 kt).

If there are wind gusts, they will also be included in the METAR report. For example, "Wind 300° 11kt, gusting 25kt" means the wind is coming from 300° (West-Northwest), with an average speed of 11 knots and gusts of up to 25 knots.

Use Flightradar24 to Track Flights During a Typhoon

You can also use Flightradar24, a flight-tracking tool, to check flight activity on the day of a typhoon.

By observing whether aircraft are taking off and landing, you can get a clearer picture of flight operations during the storm.

Keep in mind that seeing other aircraft take off or land successfully does not guarantee that your own flight will operate as scheduled. Flights may use different aircraft, routes, and departure times, and may face different weather conditions.

Have a Safe and Smooth Journey!

This article explains who decides whether flights can operate during a typhoon, the crosswind reference figures for common Boeing and Airbus aircraft, and how to use online tools to track typhoon paths and check airport weather before departure.

These tools and forecasts are for reference only. Before your trip, be sure to check your airline's official website, app, email, and text messages for updates. You should also keep an eye on the airport's flight information.

Flight safety will always come before arriving on time.

Wishing you a safe and smooth journey!
