當飛機需要在水面迫降時，乘客可能必須從機翼上的緊急出口撤離。但機翼表面非常平滑，一旦濕掉會變得很滑，讓人很難站穩。這時候，黃色扣環就派上用場了。機組人員會拿出安全繩索，固定在這些扣環上，形成一條可以抓的「臨時扶手」，讓乘客能扶著繩子慢慢前進，降低滑倒的風險，安全撤離。

至於為什麼是黃色，是因為黃色非常顯眼，在海面、起霧或光線不佳的情況下都比較容易辨識，方便機組人員在緊急時快速找到並使用。
另外要注意的是，這種黃色扣環並不是每架飛機都有。只有設有機翼上方逃生出口（overwing exit）的機型才會配置，例如空中巴士 A320。如果飛機的逃生設計不需要經過機翼，而是全部使用機身側邊的逃生滑梯，就不會配置這種扣環。
