Boeing 787 Dreamliner Makes Historic First Landing in Antarctica
A Norse Atlantic Airways Boeing 787 Dreamliner made history on November 15, 2023, becoming the first of its kind to land on the icy continent of Antarctica. The aircraft also set a new record for the largest plane to touch down in Antarctica. Navigating to Troll Airfield, a 3,000-meter-long, 60-meter-wide ice runway. The landing posed a significant challenge due to the absence of radio navigation systems to guide the aircraft and the airfield's inability to provide speed or direction measurements. The aircraft carried 45 Norwegian Polar Institute scientists and 12 tons of equipment.
