U.S. company unveils cockpit warning system to alert pilots of runway incursions
A U.S. company has developed a cockpit warning system that can alert pilots in real time using voice prompts if a runway ahead is being intruded upon. The system combines two safety technologies, Ground Proximity Warning System (GPWS) and Traffic Collision Avoidance System (TCAS), to give pilots ample time to react before the aircraft get too close. The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has called for the installation of runway incursion warning systems in aircraft cockpits, but they are not yet widely used. The company believes that mandatory regulations may be needed to encourage airlines to adopt the new system.
