Things to Note When Taking a Plane

Air travel can be stressful for some people. This article has some tips on what to wear, how to check in at the airport, what to expect at airport security, how to stay comfortable during the flight, and what to do after landing. These tips aim to help you have a more relaxed and secure journey.

What to wear when flying?
1. Avoid wearing tight-fitting clothing, especially jeans
When flying, what you wear can make a big difference in how comfortable you feel. The air pressure changes after takeoff and can cause poor blood circulation, leading to swollen feet and even blood clots in severe cases. To avoid this, wear loose-fitting clothes, especially on long flights, and avoid tight jeans. Choose natural, breathable fabrics like cotton and linen to reduce any strain on your body. Also, tying up your hair can help you feel more comfortable on the plane.

2. Avoid wearing high heels and excessive jewelry
When catching a flight, it's best to wear comfortable and breathable shoes that are easy to put on and take off. Avoid high heels or narrow shoes as they might make it difficult to move fast. Airline slippers are a good option for long flights to ensure maximum comfort. If an emergency landing occurs, wearing high heels or too much jewelry can make it hard to escape and may damage the inflatable escape slide. It's also important to note that the ground outside may be slippery, wet, or littered with glass, fuel, or debris during an emergency. Therefore, it's safer to choose shoes with good coverage that are easy to walk in.

3. Pay attention to the text on your clothes
If your clothes have political messages on them, they may not be allowed on board. Women traveling to or through the Middle East should be careful about their clothing choices. To avoid problems, it's best to avoid wearing low-cut or tight tops, as well as shorts. Remember that airlines have rules about offensive clothing, so it's important to choose your outfit wisely.

Airport Check-In and Security Check
1. Arrive at the airport 2-3 hours early
To make your airport experience stress-free, be sure to check the traffic conditions and expected congestion before heading out. Arriving at the airport 2-3 hours before your flight is highly recommended to give yourself plenty of time for check-in, security, and any unforeseen delays. This is especially important for budget airlines, which often have more restrictions and fewer check-in counters than traditional airlines. This can cause long lines, which is why most budget airlines suggest arriving at least 180 minutes before your scheduled departure time.

2. Check the airline's website for important information
Different airlines have different safety and baggage check-in standards. To make your check-in process smoother, visit the airline's website and verify the necessary information. You may need to arrive at the check-in counter at a specific time, which depends on the airline's closing time. This time could be either 1 hour or 40 minutes before the closing time. Save time by checking in online beforehand to avoid waiting in long queues.

3. Late check-in may result in your seat being replaced by a standby passenger
If you're late to check in or don't get your boarding pass in time, the airline might give your seat to someone else who's waiting to fly. If that happens, the airline probably won't owe you anything because it's not their fault - it's your own problem.

4. Please carry lithium batteries with you
Before your flight, check the airline's rules for what you can bring on the plane. Make sure you know which items are allowed in your carry-on bag and which ones should go in your checked bag. Some things, like liquids, gels, batteries, lighters, and power banks, need to be packed appropriately to avoid delays during security checks.

5. Check your checked baggage for overweight in advance
Airlines are now strict about overweight baggage. Therefore, it is recommended that before you leave for the airport, you must check the weight of your carry-on and checked baggage. During check-in, it is inconvenient and time-consuming for everyone if you have to remove overweight baggage items one by one in front of a large group of passengers.

6. Mark fragile items
If you're someone who travels frequently, you probably know what you should and shouldn't pack in your luggage. However, if you have valuable or delicate items that you need to bring with you, it's a good idea to label your luggage as "fragile". This will help ensure that airport staff handle it with care and place it on top of other luggage, which will reduce the risk of damage.

7. Take off metal objects in advance when going through security
When you're waiting in line for airport security, it can be helpful to take off some of your accessories and put them in your carry-on bag or backpack. If you have a tablet or laptop in your bag, you'll need to take it out and place it in a separate tray. Customs in every country are very strict with security checks. They'll require you to remove items like keys, mobile phones, belts, hats, metal glasses, and diamond rings, and then pass through the X-ray channel. If you have any of these items on you, taking them off beforehand can save time during security checks.

Waiting at the Gate
1. Don't block the airport's express flat elevator walkway
Some airports have flat express elevator walkways to help passengers get to the gate quickly. If you prefer not to move or want to walk slowly on the express walkway, please remember to stand to one side. In the United States, it is usually on the right side, and in the United Kingdom, it is on the left. Please avoid blocking passengers who are in a hurry to catch their flight.

2. Figure out the currency denomination before spending at the airport
When shopping at airport stores, it takes a long time to find the correct amount (including notes and coins) at checkout because you are not familiar with foreign currency and its denominations, which affects the passengers who are checking out behind you. Please figure out all the denominations of foreign currency before you buy anything, and prepare the correct amount in advance when you are queuing to pay.

3. Don't take up too many seats when waiting in the waiting area
When waiting to board in the waiting area, there are fewer seats than passengers, so some people have to stand and wait. However, you will always encounter such people who occupy multiple seats to place their luggage. Think about those who don't have a seat to sit! In civilized and conscientious countries, this kind of seat-occupying phenomenon is extremely rare.

4. Don't turn up the volume of your laptop or phone too loud
Perhaps we have all had this experience: not only do we talk loudly in the airport, but we also turn up the volume of our computers or mobile phones very loudly. To be respected, you must first learn to respect others. When listening to music or making phone calls in public, please use earphones, and remember not to speak loudly. Never do things like putting all your mobile phones, tablets, and laptops out to charge as soon as you arrive at the airport, occupying all the sockets so that other passengers who urgently need to charge can't use them.

5. Don't rush when boarding
When boarding, airlines usually arrange the boarding order according to the seat number to ensure a smooth and fast boarding process. If passengers rush to board, there will be a tense atmosphere. Don't push and rush for the space in the overhead bin. Let the vulnerable groups or those with priority boarding go first. When the ground staff calls our seat number or boarding group, we will get up and queue.

During the Flight
1. Have an evacuation plan
If the plane descends or makes an emergency landing, you only have about 90 seconds to evacuate a burning plane. You may need to find an exit through a dark, smoky cabin. When you board the plane, first understand the situation of your location and know how many rows there are between you and the emergency exit. This will make it easier for you to escape from the scene and have the best chance of survival.

2. Not everyone wants to chat
Many passengers said that they were actually troubled by people who love to chat with their neighbors on the plane. Many backpackers who travel alone love to find people to chat with, but in fact, many people want to rest. If we don't want to chat with others, we can use one-word answers, such as only answering one word when the other person asks something. Or just put on headphones. People who are used to chatting with others should be aware of whether the other person is willing. Please also lower your voice when chatting.

3. Armrests on airplane seats
If you are in a window seat, use the armrest on the window side; if you are in an aisle seat, use the aisle armrest, which means leaving the armrest for the person in the middle seat. It is usually the most uncomfortable to sit in this seat. If you can have a little more armrest, it will be better.

4. Moisturizing and relaxing items
If you plan to take a nap during a long flight, it is recommended to bring an eye mask with you. Simply blocking out the light can prepare you to enjoy a short nap. For those who are afraid of noise, you can also bring noise-canceling headphones to have a good sleep quality. When flying in a dry, high-altitude cabin, it is recommended to bring various moisturizing products, body lotion, and lip balm.

5. Disinfection
When traveling by plane, you are easily exposed to a large number of bacteria when staying in the same enclosed space with many strangers. Therefore, make sure to bring hand sanitizer or alcohol wipes and wipe the armrests, folding tables, and anything you might touch. Because you don't know how many people have touched it before you, and even in case a passenger sneezes on these devices.

After Landing
1. Don't clap when the plane lands
This etiquette is more controversial and depends on the situation. Some people think that clapping when the plane lands normally is a way to express their gratitude to the flight crew, but this behavior can be annoying. Clapping on landing is considered disrespectful to pilots as if to belittle their flying skills. Passengers can express their gratitude by politely saying thank you to them when they get off the plane.

2. Don't get up and get your luggage right away
After the plane lands, passengers should remain seated and not get up to get their luggage immediately before taxiing to the gate. In a narrow cabin, if passengers all stand up, it can cause congestion and block the aisle to the emergency exit. It is safer to wait until the plane has come to a stop and the seat belt warning light has gone out before getting up to get your luggage.
