Airbus Skywise Aviation Data Platform

Skywise

Skywise

Skywise

Skywise

Skywise

Skywise

Airbus Skywise Aviation Data Platform

In today’s aviation industry, data has become as important as fuel. Aircraft generate huge amounts of information every day, but in the past, this data was scattered across different systems and difficult to use together.

To solve this problem, Airbus launched the Skywise platform in 2017, marking a new era of digital transformation in aviation.

What is Skywise?

Skywise is an aviation data management platform created by Airbus. It can be thought of as the “data brain” of the aviation industry.

Its main purposes are to:

  • Integrate flight, maintenance, and operational data

  • Help airlines make faster decisions

  • Improve safety and efficiency

From early aircraft like the A300 to modern ones like the A350, the amount of sensor data has grown dramatically. New aircraft such as the A350 can generate up to 1 TB of data per day, making traditional data processing methods no longer sufficient.

Skywise turns this massive data into useful insights, such as:

  • Predicting which parts may fail soon

  • Finding ways to save fuel

  • Reducing flight delays

Today, more than 100 airlines and over 10,000 aircraft use the platform worldwide.

Core Technology Behind Skywise

Skywise is powered by a data platform developed with Palantir Technologies.

One of its most important features is the Digital Twin concept. Each aircraft has a real-time virtual model that can:

  • Monitor aircraft health

  • Predict failures

  • Simulate maintenance or flight strategies

This allows engineers to understand problems quickly without analyzing complex raw data.

Key Applications of Skywise

1. Predictive Maintenance

Skywise can detect issues before a failure happens. For example:

  • Identifying abnormal parts early

  • Reducing aircraft downtime (AOG)

  • Lowering maintenance costs

Airlines can shift from reactive repairs to preventive maintenance.

In one real case, Airbus engineers used Skywise to investigate a leak valve issue on the A330neo. By analyzing operational and sensor data, they discovered a software control problem and fixed it before any safety incidents occurred.

2. Real-Time Health Monitoring

If an issue occurs during flight:

  • The system instantly alerts ground teams

  • Maintenance crews can prepare parts in advance

This significantly reduces flight delays.

3. Fuel Efficiency and Carbon Reduction

Skywise also helps airlines save fuel by:

  • Analyzing flight routes and air resistance

  • Optimizing flight parameters

For example, an A320 can save up to 75 kg of fuel during a single descent, which can reduce hundreds of tons of CO₂ emissions per aircraft each year.

Some airlines report major benefits. One airline reduced at least one grounded aircraft per day, and EasyJet avoided nearly 80 flight cancellations in just two months.

The Skywise Digital Aviation Alliance

Skywise is not just an Airbus tool, it is an industry collaboration platform.

Partners include:

  • Delta TechOps

  • GE Aerospace

  • Various aircraft component suppliers

This allows airlines to manage different aircraft brands on a single platform.

Today, the Skywise ecosystem includes 100+ airlines and over 12,000 aircraft.

Data Governance and the Future

To ensure fairness, IATA and industry partners established data usage principles:

  • Airlines own their data

  • Data use must be transparent

  • The main goal is to improve safety

Looking ahead, Skywise is becoming even smarter. Engineers can now:

  • Ask maintenance questions using conversational AI

  • Automatically generate operational reports

As AI and new technologies continue to develop, Skywise will remain a key platform driving the aviation industry toward a smarter, safer, and more sustainable future.
