這個概念其實早就存在。早在 1992 年,台灣長榮航空與英國維珍航空就率先推出類似產品,當時的想法很單純:讓那些想要更好搭乘體驗,但又不想支付商務艙費用的旅客,有一個剛剛好的選擇。隨著市場逐漸接受,越來越多航空公司陸續加入,豪華經濟艙也從早期的嘗試性產品,變成現在許多航線的標準配置。

豪華經濟艙之所以越來越受歡迎,背後其實有很現實的原因。根據過去 CNN 的分析,一方面是商務旅客的預算結構正在改變,企業對差旅成本的控管越來越嚴格,使得不少人已經無法長期搭乘商務艙,但仍然需要比經濟艙更舒適的長途飛行體驗。另一方面,疫情後的旅遊需求回升,也讓更多旅客願意升級一點點,換取更好的飛行品質。同時,較大的座位空間與更舒適的乘坐環境,也帶來更好的舒適度。

更重要的是,豪華經濟艙對航空公司來說其實更具有經濟效益。在單位座位面積的收入上,它通常比經濟艙高出約 33%,甚至比商務艙還高出約 6%,但建置與營運成本卻遠低於商務艙。換句話說,它是一種價格可以提高、成本相對可控的高效率產品,因此也成為航空公司積極擴張的重點艙等。

隨著豪華經濟艙成功站穩市場,航空公司的營運策略也變得更加細緻,在同一架飛機切割成更多不同價格與規則的產品。即使是在同一艙等內,不同票種之間也可能差異很大,例如是否可以退改票、行李額度、是否能選位,以及是否包含 Wi-Fi 或升等權益等。表面上看起來是同一個艙等,但實際上旅客買到的內容已經高度分層。延伸閱讀:《知識》機票上飛機艙等「英文字母」代表的意義

另一方面,商務艙本身也正在經歷變化。隨著設計越來越高級,商務艙逐漸出現「頭等艙化」的趨勢,導致頭等艙需求下降,使得不少航空公司開始縮減甚至取消傳統頭等艙服務。在這樣的背景下,航空公司的競爭重心也逐漸轉向兩個方向:一是更豪華的商務艙,二是更具效率與市場吸引力的豪華經濟艙

當商務艙越做越精緻,另一個問題也隨之浮現,那就是安全認證的複雜度大幅提升。像美國聯邦航空局(FAA)這類監管機構,必須逐一確認每一項新設計是否符合安全標準,包括撞擊時乘客的受力情況、滑門是否會影響逃生、座椅角度是否改變傷害風險,以及新材料是否具備足夠的防火能力。

目前商務艙流行的設計,包括隱私滑門(Sliding Doors)、180 度全平躺座椅,以及各種不同角度的魚骨式排列,也都需要通過極為嚴格的測試,例如起降時滑門是否能穩定鎖定、撞擊時的頭部傷害指標(HIC)、以及 16G 減速度的碰撞測試等。

這些設計變化速度非常快,而且幾乎每一家航空公司都採取高度客製化,導致每一款新座椅幾乎都像是一個全新的產品。結果就出現一個很現實的情況:飛機可能已經生產完成,但座位卻還不能正式啟用。有些商務艙座位會被暫時封鎖,有些則延後開放販售,甚至整批飛機的交付也可能因此延遲。像荷蘭皇家航空、德國漢莎航空、星加坡航空等航空公司,都曾經遇到類似狀況。

Premium Economy Has Become A Major Trend In The Airline Industry

Premium Economy sits between Economy and Business Class. The seats are usually wider than Economy, with more legroom and extra space, which makes long-haul flights significantly more comfortable.

This concept isn’t new. As early as 1992, EVA Air from Taiwan and Virgin Atlantic from the UK were among the first to launch similar products. The idea was simple: give passengers who want more comfort than Economy, but don’t want to pay Business Class fares, a “middle option.” Over time, more airlines adopted it, and Premium Economy has shifted from an experimental offering to a standard cabin on many routes.

The growing popularity of Premium Economy comes down to practical reasons. According to past CNN analysis, one key factor is the change in business travel budgets. Companies have become more cost-conscious, meaning fewer travelers can regularly fly Business Class, even though they still need more comfort than Economy on long flights. At the same time, post-pandemic travel demand has increased, and more passengers are willing to pay a little extra for a better experience. Larger seats and improved comfort also play a big role.

From an airline’s perspective, Premium Economy is highly attractive financially. It typically generates about 33% more revenue per seat space than Economy, and in some cases even around 6% more than Business Class, while costing far less to install and operate than Business Class. In short, it offers a strong balance of higher revenue and controlled costs, which is why airlines are expanding it aggressively.

As Premium Economy becomes more established, airline pricing strategies are also becoming more complex. A single aircraft cabin can now include multiple fare types and restrictions. Even within the same cabin, tickets may differ in terms of refunds, changes, baggage allowance, seat selection, or extra perks like Wi-Fi and upgrades. So while it may look like one product, what passengers actually get can vary significantly.

Meanwhile, Business Class is also evolving. As cabins become more luxurious, Business Class is starting to resemble First Class, which has reduced demand for traditional First Class cabins. As a result, many airlines are scaling back or removing First Class entirely. Competition is now focusing on two areas: more premium Business Class products, and more efficient, attractive Premium Economy cabins.

At the same time, these upgrades bring new challenges. As Business Class designs become more advanced, safety certification has become increasingly complicated. Regulators like the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) must carefully review every new design to ensure it meets safety standards. This includes passenger safety during impact, whether sliding doors affect evacuation, how seat angles influence injury risk, and whether new materials are sufficiently fire-resistant.

Modern Business Class features, such as sliding privacy doors, fully lie-flat 180-degree seats, and various herringbone-style layouts, must go through extremely strict testing. This includes verifying door stability during takeoff and landing, measuring head injury criteria (HIC) in crash scenarios, and conducting impact tests with 16G deceleration forces.

Because these designs are evolving so quickly and are often highly customized by each airline, every new seat effectively becomes a new product. This sometimes leads to a situation where an aircraft is already built, but its seats are not yet certified for use. As a result, Business Class cabins may be temporarily blocked, delayed for sale, or even cause aircraft delivery delays. Airlines such as KLM, Lufthansa, and Singapore Airlines have all faced similar challenges.
