Why do some airlines ask passengers to weigh themselves before they get on a plane?

Why do some airlines ask passengers to weigh themselves before they get on a plane?

Many airlines require passengers to weigh themselves before boarding a plane. The primary reason for this is to improve the distribution of weight on the aircraft, which is essential for enhancing flight safety. Airlines like Air New Zealand, Korean Air, and Bangkok Airways have already collected passenger weight information to achieve this goal. However, this measure has also raised concerns about privacy and discrimination.

Some believe that passengers will cooperate if it is for flight safety. This is particularly important for small aircraft, where having overweight passengers on board can affect the balance of the aircraft and increase the risk of accidents. An example of this is Air Midwest Flight 5481, which crashed because the aircraft was overweight and unevenly distributed due to the use of outdated weight data.

Some people argue that it is unnecessary to measure the weight of passengers as the aircraft's design already takes this into account. They believe that mandating passenger weight measurements would be an invasion of privacy and that individuals should have the right to choose whether or not to disclose their weight information.

Airlines typically have a margin of error when estimating the weight of passengers, especially during long-haul flights with a full passenger load. This margin of error can be magnified, and therefore, requiring passengers to weigh themselves can help accurately determine the weight of the aircraft.

In today's world where data plays a crucial role, accurate knowledge of the weight distribution of an aircraft can significantly enhance flight efficiency and safety. However, passenger weight is considered personal information, and airlines must respect their privacy. To address this issue, airlines can collect passenger weight data through surveys or random sampling, or use estimated data provided by international aviation organizations. This way, passengers won't face inconvenience, and their flight experience won't be impacted.
